How to get dental research published

If you are a dentist with an interesting or novel concept, your work may be suitable for publication in a wide array of dental journals.

We have currently worked on a variety of interesting topics for international dental research groups, including extensive work in dental pulp stem cells and dental cell survival in microgravity environments. Normally, a manuscript is clearly divided into several sections:

Title Page: Title, author(s) names and affiliations

Abstract:  Summary of manuscript contents in 125-250 words   (varies by journal and article type)

Keywords: List of important keywords relevant to the article

Body: (see below) Description of the study, divided into meaningful sections.

References: Full description of all citations in the manuscript

Figures and Tables: These are included at the end of the manuscript

Appendix: Additional materials, such as figures, equations, or   pertinent outside findings.

Notes: Rarely, additional clarification or notes will be required.

Divisions of the body normally appear in this order:

Introduction/Background: Background information about the topic,   experimental   methods, history, or techniques to be discussed in the manuscript and   study objectives.

Materials and Methods: Detailed descriptions of how experiments were   performed, including participants, materials, and techniques. This should   be presented in enough detail that a researcher can duplicate the   experiment.

Results: A clear description of the findings of the experiments described in the   Methods section. Avoid including conclusions (such as “these finding   indicate that…”)

Discussion: Conclusions and clinical/research implications of the findings   discussed in the results. Limitations and reviews of other studies may   also be included.

Conclusion (optional): A single paragraph highlighting the most important   findings of the study.

Conflict of Interest Statement (optional), Funding Statement (optional), and Acknowledgements (optional)

What to avoid in each section of a medical manuscript:

Introduction/Background:

DO NOT add specific details about your experiment or results

Materials and Methods:

DO NOT discuss results or findings

Results:

DO NOT repeat how you did your experiments

Discussion:

DO NOT repeat your results item for item (only summarize main points)

Biomedical editors, like other medical editors, do more than just correct grammar, punctuation, and style. They also reword awkward phrases, reduce unnecessary jargon, simplify sentence structure, and ensure appropriate use of language. This increases the flow and clarity of manuscripts.

Clear, precise, and concise manuscripts are not only more likely to be published, they are also more likely to be cited after publication. Well edited manuscripts can thus contribute to an author’s reputation and even encourage collaboration and funding for future projects. Editors may also check style, ensuring compliance with journal requirements or standard style guidelines (such as the American Medical Association, or AMA, style guidelines).

Biomedical editors also check facts and references. In many cases, an editor may be able to suggest related references to support the author’s conclusions or provide additional important background material. Another important job of the biomedical editor is to correct logic and flow of the document. A good biomedical editor will also work with the author to identify missing information and ensure consistency throughout the manuscript.

Most importantly, medical and biomedical editors support the author’s voice. The editor retains the author’s style and meaning, ensuring that facts are clearly conveyed.

Test your biomedical editing skills:

1. “The percent of males was 15%” or “The percentage of males was 15%”?
2. “Children aged 11 to 14” or “Adolescents aged 11 to 14”?
3. “polymerase chain reaction (PCR)” or “Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)”?
4. “QRT-PCR” or “qRT-PCR”?
5. “The data were analyzed” or “The data was analyzed”?
6. “Artificial hip joints are stressed by load-bearing” or “Artificial hip joints are strained by load-bearing”?
7. “10 patients suffering with osteoporosis” or “10 patients presented osteoporosis”?
8. “Female patients” or “women patients”?

Answers:

1. You should use percentage when referring to nonspecific numbers. Percent is only used when specific numbers are known.
2. Adolescents are generally aged 11-19 in medical terms. This term is distinct from children, which generally refers to ages younger than 11 (before puberty).
3. Unless the acronym consists of proper nouns (such as “Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD)”), each letter is not capitalized. Thus, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is correct.
4. Most style guidelines prefer qRT-PCR to refer to quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Biomedical and medical editors have specialized experience to recognize these common abbreviations, as no rule exists that applied to all medical abbreviations equally.
5. The word data can be plural or singular. In most manuscripts, it is correct to say “data were” as many pieces of data exist.
6. In general terms, stress is the force on a material, and strain is what happens to the material under a given stress. In this case stressed should be used, as the phrase refers to the force on the artificial joint.
7. The American Medical Association recommends using neutral expressions to describe diseases, so avoid using phrased like suffering with or afflicted by.
8. This may seem counterintuitive to some, but most journals and researchers now prefer that human subjects be referred to as men and women. Animal subjects are still often referred to as male and female.

Many household items are made of plastic—including car seats

Household and commercial items made of plastics are referred to as commercial polymer materials. Car seats are one such item. They generally contain polymers with additives that account for the color and other special mechanical properties. Unfortunately, largely due to these additives, most plastics leech and deteriorate with age. Leeching means that small amounts of chemicals increase over time. Deterioration generally refers to the formation of tiny cracks that grow larger over time.

Micro-cracks, or crazes, are a hidden danger

Most cracks that initially form in the plastic are too small to see without a microscope. Unfortunately, if you hit these cracks with enough force—as often happens in car accidents—these cracks can suddenly grow very large, causing the car seat to break suddenly.  For a child, the integrity of the seat can b=mean life or death in a crash. A broken seat will not protect a child—or worse, it can cause the plastic to break into sharp shards or sections.

So why are car seats dangerous after they have been in accidents?

Sometimes car seats don’t get hit hard enough to break, but the tiny cracks have already grown hundreds of times as large and many more small cracks have formed. Though still invisible, this means that the seat could break under very small forces, such as being dropped or even the mildest of car crashed. Unfortunately, many unknowing parents often resell used seats that may break on very small impacts because they already have millions of tiny ‘invisible’ cracks.

These tiny cracks invisible cracks are called “crazes”. When plastics craze, they become dangerous in moving parts. Figure one shows what microscopic crazes looks like in plastic [1].

If people could see those cracks (crazes) in car seats, they wouldn’t be nearly as quick to say that old plastic is ok in car seats—or many other household products. Older plastics are even worse than the plastics they make now for crazing (cracking).  Older car seats may be fine to use, but if you’re in a crash, these old seats have a good chance of  fracturing or outright breaking, either not protecting or actually harming baby. Plus seats older than about 10 years are designed with head covers prone to breakage in a crash.

 Dangerous Chemicals in Old Plastics

Beyond the danger of mechanical failure through crazing, some older plastics start leaking small amounts of dangerous chemicals after months or years of use. Generally, there is not enough leeching to make a baby sick right away from a car seat, but there can be enough to raise the chance of cancer, allergies, and other conditions later in life.

Many easy-to-clean plastic-like fabrics, including those used in toys, bath toys, diapers, and car seats are now known to leech toxic chemical slowly, especially when they become older [2]. Figure 2 shows plastics that may leech toxins in car seats.
A Better Solution-Car Seat Recycling

Most car seats are made of over 15 pounds of plastic, cloth, foam, nylon harnesses, some polystyrene plastic and some metal [3]. Many programs exist to help you recycle these plastics, instead of reusing dangerous car seats.
